Ukraine gave Russia all the nuclear weapons still in it's country when the Soviet Union broke up. In return Russia promised never to invade Ukraine and NATO promised Ukraine would be accepted into their organization. Ukraine has been trying to become a NATO member for decades but has not been accepted.

There are a number of reasons why Ukraine is not part of NATO including their own choice(s)…”Plans for NATO membership were shelved by Ukraine following the 2010 presidential election in which Viktor Yanukovych, who preferred to keep the country non-aligned, was elected President”.

The US public is so far not in support of using the military to directly support Ukraine. According to this 6 day old poll ( CNN )42% support US military intervention, and 58% oppose it. 67% of Americans support more sanctions.

Currently Congress is debating halting oil shipments from Russia as another sanction. The debate whether the US public will support higher fuel prices is central.

There are other military options that don't include direct intervention.

A no-fly zone could be established by the US or NATO
A naval blockade could be created to halt Russian imports and naval activity.

What do TFSers think about these issues?

Either of these would be viewed by Putin as an act of war.

In regards to a "no-fly zone"... it would be worthless to call for it, and not be prepared to support it with military force. As soon as Russia violated it, and we shot down one of their aircraft WW3 would begin.

in regards ot a naval blockade... same thing.

The most that can/could be done relative to these two things is for the countries of the world to boycott all Russian commercial aircraft and commercial ships... and refuse landing/docking.

We could follow the advise of Lindsey "Trump's Lapdog" Graham and assassinate Putin... of course that would open the flood gates for all the nut bags around the world who don't like U.S. political leaders.

Or we could take some of our "mothballed" ships (maybe a submarine).... paint them black with the skull & crossbones...man them with special forces or mercenaries... then start high jacking Russian ships... diverting the oil (or other goods) to the USA via one or more 3rd world countries...

Eventually "we" the USA can "save the day" by blowing these pirate ships out of the water (after "our" guys have left the ships)...

etc.

Just cut to the chase and invade Russia and take their oil. Like we did in Afghanistan and Syria.

I agree with everything you are saying. One of the main reasons we don't directly intervene in Ukraine is the threat of war with another nuclear power. It is reminiscent of the cold war. Soviet, Chinese and US forces fighting in a nation would never come into direct conflict with each other but would support forces they were aligned with in "proxy" wars.

And if over the last 30 years +/- Ukraine had joined NATO, which would have required specific anti-corruption and pro “democracy” actions… they would likely not be in this situation.

Of course if “we” hadn’t elected a pro-Putin/anti-NATO jackass as President, that too might have impacted the situation.

The US still hasn't cut off imports of Russian oil. This seems like one of the first things we should have sanctioned not the last. Politicians are worried about the political impact of rising prices at the pump.

From 1946 to 1988 the Soviet Union wasn't traded with at all by any western nations. This was not a problem. We didn't import their oil or anything else. We didn't sell them anything. It shouldn't be a problem to go back to that considering most of the Eastern Block countries were included in the Soviet Socialist Republic but are now free.

Yes... and considering we don't get very much from Russia anyway it is a "no brainer".

A new type of Proxy:

As Poland weighed sending its warplanes to Ukraine last week, Warsaw asked the White House if the Biden administration could guarantee it would provide them with U.S.-made fighter jets to fill the gap. The White House said it would look into the matter. The Biden administration didn’t oppose the Polish government giving Kyiv the MiGs, which could potentially escalate tensions between NATO and Moscow. Poland, for now, has held on to its fighter jets.

So, if Ukraine had dirt on Hunter or Hillary's email servers, wouldn't they play that to get more US support?

From what I remember Hunter Biden was helping to reorganize their power industry after the ouster of the Putin Puppet Yanukovich by the Ukraine parliament.
