Think of the 'big guns' in European football and look how they are doing.

Spain - Champions of Europe currently played one, lost one

Italy - Champions of the World currently played two, drawn two

England - Touted by British media as possible contenders, currently played two, drawn two.

France - World Cup finalists last time round, currently played two, lost one and won one

Germany - Historically second best European team, currently played two, only won one.

The only one of the big European teams to have done anything so far is The Netherlands, who have won both their matches, yet imo didn't look great in either of them.

Compare that to the South Americans. Brazil and Argentina who've won both their matches and looked good in doing so. Chilli, Paraguay and Uruguay are all topping their respective groups.

Are the European teams going to be found out at this World Cup?

There is a reason why it's called the World Cup... They are not playing for some neighborhood championship title.

It's the idea that for the past fifty years the best teams in the world have all been European teams, apart from Argentina and Brazil. No other teams are given a realistic look in, the teams expected to do well are the likes of France, Germany, England, Italy, Spain etc but this time round the European teams have been lacking.

Maybe they aren't as good as the hype they've been given.

To be fair to Germany, they won their first match convincingly and were screwed by the ref in their second.

...spain played a swiss side that on the day were outstanding defensively and only scored because of some keystone cops defending...
they only had two attempts on the spanish goal the whole game ffs..i don't think spain need to start fretting just yet on the basis of one dodgy result ...

I blame the TV. Smaller nations view the bigger nations footballers with the exposure of football on TV and know what they are up against and plan/ play accordingly.
There also must be an element of nonchelance from the bigger sides where they are taking the points for granted. Yes NKorea got spanked by Portugal but against Brasil, their effort was unquestioned. Couple that with 10 yard passes... even I can hit a ten yard pass... and you can be a match for anyone. XX

Over-paid and overrated. It's all coming to light at last.
