CHICAGO - Most high school students eagerly await the day they pass driver's education class. But 16-year-old Mayra Ramirez is indifferent about it.

Ramirez is blind, yet she and dozens of other visually impaired sophomores in Chicago schools are required to pass a written rules-of-the-road exam in order to graduate ? a rule they say takes time away from subjects they might actually use.

. . .

That's bulls***. They're not going to be able to drive, so why have to take a driving exam?

My 11 year old nephew had to sit a driving test to allow him to buy and use his electric wheel chair.

I was just reading this story and checking if it had been posted already. My first thought was "What the hell kind of sense does that make?" That's definetly a subject where they could say, "It's not like I'm ever going to use it anyway." They shouldn't be required to take a subject that obviously is irrelevant to them.

Aside from it having nothing to do with their future, I think it's down right mean to make them take it. It's a constant reminder of their limitations. I know that majority can leave extremely normal lives. But a blind person obviously will never be able to drive a car. So they shouldn't have to learn the rules of a road that they won't drive on.
