Animal Crossing DS

I want to buy this game so I can talk to my boyfriend through it while I'm away from home, near another wifi source, but I need to know. Can you only communicate locally? Or can you meet with people from all around the real world? He lives in the States and me in Canada. Could we chat using this game? If not, is there a game we can? I found their site but it wasn't too descriptive, I'd like to know if someone has the game and can tell me, thanks.

When I had it...it only #let me communicate with people in a 100meter radius or something

you can get them things though that let you connect to a further distance...don't know if it's the whole internet though

I <3 Animal Crossing.. I have the DS one but I rarely use it anymore, I like the Game Cube version better anyway.
