I never developed a fear of snakes. One of my jobs for the biology dept in college was cleaning out the cages & we would dump the poisonous snakes out in the middle of the courtyard and control them until the cages were clean & dry.

According to my family I was always afraid of snakes. They have a story about when I was a toddler, before knowing I was nearsighted. We were eating spaghetti, and I started freaking out. Apparently a noodle had fallen on the ground, and it looked like a snake to me.

You might try spending some time with a calm non-poisonous one. They are truly kewl critters.
