Go to

Start> Run and enter %temp%

This will bring up your temp directory which is sort of a way station for files coming and going from the net.

Look for a file that looks something like '{0000-0000-0000-0000-0000}.exe' (with various numbers in place of the zeros).

If you find it, it's a virus.

I removed it just now with the latest Malwarebytes by running a Flash scan.

Before that I couldn't just simply delete or unlock the file and it wouldn't allow me to rename it (to disassociate the executable with whatever was locking it) - There were no noticeable processes in Task Manager either.

The executable is associated with a site that Malwarebytes will block for you. More than likely the home base that it dials back to.

Come on this is some kind of DOS. I still haven't found a way to access DOS on my MAC.

Yup, the Run function in Windows is a short cut through DOS, you can even bring DOS up by entering CMD.

But if you're using a MAC you might not have to worry about this file.

I personally think I got if from something that I downloaded off the net but we also have a scam going on in NZ where we're being solicited by another country exclaiming they've detected malware on our computer and trick people into downloading a file from the net to clean it out.

The file happens to be a Trojan that allows them to come into your computer and run away with all of your credentials.

Obviously I never accepted the phone call but it leaves one wondering if they may have found an alternate route to get the file on our comps.

..or just don't download porn

In my (i think its 14 years now might be less)years of detecting and fixing and etc of malware, spyware, virus', etc on other peoples computers it all came down to the right software protecting you from getting it in the first place. My advice uninstall all other virus scanners and install AVAST(its free too) plus be certain to have a firewall which normally most routers have one built in so the need is becoming less. Oh and use firefox which has a plug-in called fireshark for help with detecting malware(there are others but this is just one example of what to use) or one of the more secure browsers other than IE.

These basic security things are really all you need aside from common sense on what not to click while surfing the the net or opening emails, etc.

I've NEVER had a virus, malware, etc... on my system just by following my own advice.

here are some helpful tips on how to protect yourself and how to remove should you get infected:

Also using McAfee Secure Search doesn't hurt; I never go anywhere without first checking the site with them. Haven't had any problems since.
