The figures that government scientists released today, more than double previous estimates, and may still be conservative.

L.A Times

They're now saying 40,000 barrels per day was leaking BEFORE they cut off the pipe.

To date, seven times more oil has been released than in the Exxon Valdez disaster.

Sounds like they are afraid to tell the truth. It's like watching a horrible wreck in slow, slow motion.

Since the fishing industry is dead, why doesn't BP hire all the fishing boats, attach oil skimmers to the front or sides, and put these people to work? Send them out to catch oil. Pay them by the barrel. Maybe we can get this crap cleaned up fast. That and how about simple capitalism? Just have BP pay for each barrel of oil that's been recovered by any means. Don't see much attention to cleaning up. Alot of talking. BP is going to pay for the fishing boat captain to sit on his but, or help. I think the smart solution would be to get all the fishermen to help.

I think what's going on here is BP is trying to minimize culpability and to avoid incurring excessive costs. They've been minimizing things since this started.

They've lost half their stock value.

It wouldn't surprise me to see this bankrupt them.

Does anyone remember the Amoco Cadiz spill and what the American company did to help with clean up?

If you don't they did nothing, it's estimated to have caused $250 million worth of damage in 1978 after spilling 1,604,500 barrels of crude oil. It took the French 12 years to get any compensation from Amoco and were awarded just $120 million by the US in 1990.

In comparison I think BP have acted much better. Also what affects BP affects America, 39% of the company is owned by Americans for pensions. So I suggest people stop slagging them off and driving their share price down and work towards getting this mess cleaned up as quickly as possible.

They finally have a handle on what they need to do there, it only took them 2 months to get to it. They've announced that they're going to move the booms away from the sandy beaches, which are relatively easy to clean, and place them to protect the marshlands.

Now all they need to do is coordinate the available boats to clean up. they need to pair up the small boats with a skimmer to contain and suck up the spill before it gets to the marshes. The bigger boats need to be deployed further out to get as much of it as possible before it reaches land, and BP is going to double what they are collecting within 2 weeks.

In my opinion, they should stop using the dispersants as well, as that is keeping the oil from reaching the surface and causing deaths of marine life.
