Convert avi files to mpeg?

Anyone know of a program that will do this?

My sister's hard drive has died and most of the stuff on her external is in avi format. We're hoping that when I visit her this week, I can convert it all so she can watch stuff on her DVD player. Cos she might be without a laptop for a while

I have heard of google, thank you very much. I just thought it might be safer for my comp if I go with tried and tested stuff instead of downloading any old s*** that might infect my computer next time, try not to be such a smart ass.

both links i posted are reported safe to use on the mcafee website. ive used both sites numerous times and never had any trouble.
