What comes to mind as you think of the United States?

Yeah - most countries try and fill you with their propaganda rubbish whatever it might be, but I've noticed on visits to the US that it's one of the worst for uncritical preaching of so called 'values', lol.

I've also noticed that many Americans tend to be very naive and nationistically insular - an attitude that America is the only civilised country in the world quite often! This seems a bit comical to others.

No not really but thinking Buckingham Palace and 'those guards with the big hats' is about 2 sq miles of it. Kinda winds me up a little when I tell some Americans I'm from the UK and they respond with "Oh yeah? I was in London in so-or-so year." Buckingham Palace probably makes up less than 1% of the UK, there is much more to see and experience.
