Politicians of all persuasions keep interfering with every aspect of our lives. Now they're making it personal.

At a time when our government owned hospitals are falling apart and babies have started to be born on the toilet, this is not good policy.

Quote:

From Jo Hunter of Homebirth Australia:

Today Nicola Roxon introduced two Bills to Parliament.

1) Health legislation amendment (midwife and nurse practitioner) Bill 2009
This Bill is about accessing Medicare and PBS, there is nothing currently written in this Bill that discuses eligibility - there is no comment within it at present that states anything about homebirth. However, in her speech she openly stated that there will be no MBS for Homebirth.

2) (and this is the clincher) Midwife Professional Indemnity (commonwealth contribution scheme) Bill 2009
This Bill excludes midwives from providing intrapartum homebirth care.

THIS IS A SAD SAD DAY FOR THE WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA!

Here is the press release from Homebirth Australia

Deaths will increase with new announcements

Wow, home birth is not something i'd want, but the option should definately be there !
This is crazy So long as the lady and baby both seem healthy I see nothing wrong with a home birth!

i sometimes wonder what agenda politicians follow. its is not the best interest of the future of the voting public. it could be easy to believe that there is a lot of silver flowing from big business, governmentwards. i simply cant imagine, however, who would benefit from this. big brother looms larger?

That's absolutely appalling! I personally would prefer a hospital, but home births can be just as safe as hospital births, and certainly less stressful!

This may not be a popular opinion but I can see the sense in not giving the option for a national health service but If you can afford to go private then fair enough.

given that the future is most likely a collapsed or grossly underfunded, ineffective public health system, and unaffordable private health, i dont understand this. hospitals cant cope now.

I agree. If someone else is footing the bill..then you should do it on their terms. If you want to pay extra to do what you want, than go for it.

I'd love to have a home birth but the costs begin at $3000 cause you have to pay for the insurance to cover your midwife, it's just not do-able in most cases.

I guess it all depends on the stats really. If its safe to homebirth then it shouldn't be banned, if it isn't then it should.
