I'll start this off with a short list, but I want people to know clearly certain things I see that are distasteful and ineffective in regards to marketing their web sites.

I have been designing and marketing web sites since the days of AOL 3.0, those that have been around that long, know that goes way, way back to the early days, when cable internet was a dream, and a faster connection meant a faster dial up modem along with an ISP that could handle it, which were rare.

In those early days, getting natural search engine listings was a piece of cake, all these new untapped fields that had zero web presence made it super easy to get at the top of the listings, at the same time, nobody was looking for you there, for the web was not taken that seriously as a business platform, except of course porn sites.

I was the original guy that invented guerilla marketing, I always stopped short of it becoming tacky, or down right annoying, yet the successive generations don't quite hold that kind of restraint.

The first tactic, outside of having a ton of content, is in regards to getting your url known. This is done simply by having it on as many web sites as possible. With the advent of the popularity of online forums, of which I have always held restraint in marketing from, at least outside of the buy and sell sections. If you are posting a url to your web site, and are new, you are spamming in my book, no holes barred, spamming.

At the same time, people that have been on a board, long time contributors, people that are really participating genuinely, I see no problem if they want to tell their friends about their new venture. Keep in mind though, how you behave there, your personal actions reflect upon the business you own, this means you cannot let down your hair, have a bad day, or anything not befitting a professional operation. Take note, I have several URL's, a main business with several divisions underneath it, yet take note, not one single mention to the name, the url, or anything for that matter outside of simply stating, I'm a business owner, and that is only to show my credentials when I'm giving out business advice.

Going back to the ethical approach, getting your url out there simply means contacting other web site owners in a similar field and manually asking for recipical links. You will have to keep checking back to make sure they still exist on each others pages, but that's the way to do it, and from there, the search engines will find you, and give you better positioning.

I'm only covering links in this installment, I will be adding onto it as this thread becomes popular. Next I cover content.
