My music teacher was talking about this (for some random reason) in my listening period today.

In Beethoven's 5th Symphony at the start where it goes dadada dummm ( ) it's three short notes and a long note. In the morse code , "...-" is the letter V. Beethoven wrote his symphony before the morse code was invented.

Me and my friend decided to expand this further, so here we go.

Giving someone the Vs is (hand gesture for peace flipped so that the palm of your hand faces you, for the people who don't know) a gesture to say "f*** you". So. Next time you're listening to Beethoven's 5th, just think that he's really just saying "F*ck off"

Why does the palm have to be flipped that way? why can't he be really saying 'peace, love and harmony'?

sometimes people reverse symbols to make them mean the opposite, such as an upside down cross for satanism, the v could be the opposite of victory or peace.

it could also be a lewd gesture, similar to what the middle finger suggests. although the exact origin and original meaning of the middle finger gesture is possibly unknown.

If I hear Beethovens 5th, I don't hear peace, Love and Harmony. It sounds quite angry.

I agree Kit - it kind of sounds like it cvould be saying f**k off!

In the UK the palm can face either direction and have the same meaning for the Vs. Churchill was quite prone to changing how he made the sign, but that could be due to the bottle of whiskey he drank each day.

oh okay, i've never seen it used that way. i wonder if using it forwards is more popular around scotland or wales. i've only seen the english use it backwards, but you did mention churchill. on the other hand, i think nixon had to have meant it in the british sense, "up yours, and yours too! look, i'm using both hands!" he sure was.
