Thanks. Generally I would try to fight the stuff they said but it was just followed by "well Laura, you gotta admit you are really screwed up in the head!" And they thought it was something funny It really hurt tho.

yeah, that would hurt. It's just mean. I'm sorry that you were treated that way. Arg to them, and to you.

I know people who wont go because of ignorance. They dont think that anyone can help them. Or maybe they are in denial and do not think they even need help at all. I know my mother wont go because she is in denial. The women needs helps. So help me god if she read this ><

People used to call me a f***-up

You're not a f***-up they are for not understanding, did you know that I didn't know what stress was till I saw a Therapist, because I had lived with it every day of my life and took it as just a part of life,People are so harsh. Don't listen to them you're great and that's what you go on, hold your head up high and smile be proud of YOU for you're special

A Mental Case Stigma is what really prevents people from getting the help they need, but if one had heart problems or Diabetes or any other disease they wouldn't think twice about getting it treated, a mental illness is a disease, for a lot of people it is a lack of Seratonin to the brain which is a physical disease, but the Stigma of Psychiatrist or Psychologists and seeing one brings out the worst in people around you unless they educate themselves on the disease, even then a lot of people think, I don't need to talk to anyone professional I can handle it on my own, some can if it is a small fleeting depression or whatever you have, but in the long run it is best to see the right specialist for a special disease. And think about it what does Mental mean? it means of the brain which most people have. Nothing to be ashamed of. The Stats on people seeking the help they need is scary, 10% actually seek professional help and work on it to get better, the other 90% are walking time bombs and are only found out once they've done something tragic. Sad but true. Do what is best and more comfortable for you but know that it is a real disease and should not be ignored and sluffed off as nothing because your scared everything you tell your Therapist is confidential and as for your friends and family, it shouldn't be done or not done because of what THEY think. I agree, I think it also depends on how introspective the person is. I know myself very well; I knew that when I started having nightmares and blowing up at people and crying all the time that I had a problem. It lasted for over a year; I did go to some marriage counseling which helped me deal with some of my bigger problems caused by the stress in my marriage. It's still difficult because I'm not completely over it, but I started writing in my journal every night and making small goals that I could accomplish each month to get myself out of my slump, and it's working very well. So for me, I don't think I really need to see anyone because I am feeling healthy and getting happier by the day! I know for a fact that some people can't do that; mental strength and understanding just happens to be a strong point for me.

Do you think people who avoid going to see a psychologist, shrink, etc... don't go because they are afraid of hearing the truth or won't like what they will tell them?

I always avoided it because of the duty of care. I finally gave in after a lot of pressure from friends and went to see a free counselor. After reassuring me that no matter what, my parents wouldn't not be informed, I finally opened up. My parents were not told of anything, but everything I said was told to all my teachers at school and a report made to DoCS.
Friends are easier to talk to that impartial professionals who are only listening for they paycheck and have legal obligations.

I think some might be afraid to face the truth. Maybe others feel the sameway I do(I've been to a few myself)that in a lot of ways they do not help and it is hard to find one that you can really connect with.

While I've never felt I've needed therapy, there are a couple reasons why I'd never go to a therapist. First is that they're extremely expensive. If I ever felt I did need therapy, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it.

Second, my experience with psychology types has led me to believe they are all crazy themselves. Near every person I met that went to school for psychology is a complete loon. Some of the psychology types I've met have been compulsive liars, manic-depressives, and introverts to the point of near non function. Near all of them have mommy or daddy issues, or some great trauma in their past they never fully dealt with.

Perhaps its just a coincidence on my part, and most are fairly normally. Still, leaves a negative image image in my mind. How is someone that has such difficulty managing his or her own life supposed to help me make sense of my own life?

Not everyone needs to go. It is not a denial thing or a money thing or know too much about you thing. Some people get emotional/mental help/stability from friends and family. And just because someone goes to a therapist, does not mean there is anything wrong with them. Some people want to go and talk about themselves.

i think there remains social stigma about talking to anyone-let alone a psychologist. then there is the lack of psych therapists out there who are worth going to see-i saw a few, and counsellors and hten decided to do my degree to "fill the gap". now i tutor psych students across the globe online to help that "gap" be filled.

the welfare system has a serious lack of psychologists and other human service professionals who walk their talk. it's wahy i won't work for "the system" anymore- i', seeking to support those entering and working in the system, for those who access the system
