Spring Valley rabbi can't bake matzo in school bus bakery

SPRING VALLEY - Rabbi Aaron Winternitz can't bake matzo for Passover this year in his school bus bakery attached to his Wilsher Avenue house.

The Building Department is not convinced the oven is safe.

Deputy Building Inspector Manny Carmona this afternoon issued the rabbi a letter telling him he could not use the oven. The rabbi couldn't provide an engineer's certification that the make-shift bakery was safe and had been properly installed.

"My department is not satisfied this oven is safe to use," Carmona said. "He did as much as he could."

The school bus oven was discovered last Friday when a neighbor called the police after smelling smoke. The smoke was coming from the metal stack atop the bus in the backyard of the rabbi's house.

The rabbi said he had been baking matzo for nearly three years.
