Should Britain and France have merged?

Fine wine and quality cheese? What has Britain missed by not joining in a union with France?

Formerly secret documents from the National Archives show Britain and France considered a "union" in the 1950s.

At the time of the proposal by the French Prime Minister Guy Mollet, France was facing trouble on several fronts, including the nationalisation of the Suez Canal.

Although the British premier Anthony Eden turned the idea down, he was more enthusiastic about another suggestion ? that France join the Commonwealth, which would have meant the Queen being their head of state.

How would life have been different if there had been a union? What would the countries have gained from each other? Has the Commonwealth lost out from not having France as a member?

They have something like that. it's called Ontario and Quebec. Plus it would've been hard for the two to merge because of the problems both had in the past with each other.

Although this is a simple answer to a complicated question; I am of the opinion anything encouraging unity between us as a race is a good thing.

Im not saying it's bad, just hard to do. I mean, Quebec is trying to seperate from us. Even after all that, they wanna be their own country, even at the cost of the economy.
