I did an experiment one time with HCl,Iodine and Magnesium. I boiled it in a pot on the stovetop...and after a while the mixture had started emitting a blood red gas or vapour.

I am curious. With these heavy elements with a catalyst present is it possible for Iodine to gain one electron from the magnesium to make a noble gas?

That is what I am speculating occurred. Another thing the experiment reeks like hell. The smell of the kitchen when I was done smelled like a mens washroom that has been used frequently but left unattended

Furthermore if this was boiled further would this evolve to produce either :

-Magnesium Chloride -or-
-Clorine and Magnesium Hydride

where the lost electron from the magnesium would be an ionic sharing between the two elements?
