I think computers and all that have opened up music a lot as we can now emulate whatever instrument we want to play that we might not be able to play ourselves. It's enabled a bit more diversity into the music scene, which can be good or bad depending on what genre it's used in.

It must be really difficult to write electronic music, in particular the dance stuff, I imagine the rhythms and tempo would be difficult to change in a way that doesn't seem completely weird. But as some have said it can't be as difficult as actually learning the instruments that are being prodcued on computers.

I'm not saying making electronic music is harder than learning and playing an instrument, they're different skills. Just that it does take talent. It just winds me up when people call bands like Prodigy 'talentless'.

I know where you're coming from but all 'good music' uses computers either in the studio or when played live, except when it's 'unplugged' but you don't really get that with even live bands nowadays.

I don't listen to a lot of terribly recent music

The vast majority of electronic music producers have a background playing an instrument, I think producing and sampling or having an ear for music and just playing an instrument are very similar.

You're not a musician are you?

Lol but if you listen to it on CD or digitally it's more than likely been passed through a computer to tweak it.

I'd love to see someone actually say that the Prodigy are talentless to the lead singer's face, he looks bloody terrifying!

No, but I know a lot of people who are. They all appreciate the talent and time good electronic music takes to produce even if they're not really into it. It mainly seems to be people who aren't musicians who turn their noses up at genres of music their blinkered view of what good music is.

While they might have talent. It takes no musical talent to produce their final outcome. Eg give me a prodigy album a computer, and the right program and I'll be able to replicate it. Give me a guitar and tell me to play a pantera song, well that's just not going to happen. And I can somewhat play guitar!

Yup I know and it's s*** I'd rather hear someone for their actual talent, not something that's been shoved through a computer, hence why I go to loads of gigs

No you wouldn't though, not without practice on that program (some people have been using programs like that for years before they master it, some never do), essentially the same as playing an instrument.

Even live gigs use sound engineers.

Really? Every muso I know thinks it's a joke and gives it no respect at all.

And in your op it sounded like you were quoting them and every other muso I've ever met.
