Why do so many Americans respect Christopher Columbus? Why do Americans celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus never landed on any piece of land which has since become an American state. Columbus played no role in creating American independence. Columbus played no role in creating what are now known as American values such as free speech and freedom of religion.
Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are what make America great. America has these freedoms because of philosophers like Baruch Spinoza and John Locke - and there are no holidays in America about Spinoza or Locke.
I hear you. They (the school system) taught and retaught us that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 from the 2nd grade all the way through the 7th grade.
