Was not involved in it but studied it some.

It was the turning point in the french conflict in Vietnam where they were defeated by those we would later fight.

A classical case of French military genius where they underestimated the other guy in a huge way.

Some of their best elite troops dug in surrounded by mountains they thought their base was invincible no one could shell them there or bomb them there .

The Viet Minh used simple man power to drag howitzers up to the mountains and began shelling the crap out of the french from elevated positions which reduced the french base to rubble very quickly. That the french lasted as long as they did is testiment to how tough their average legionarre and average soldiers was.But in the end their officers surrendered.

Interesting post script the howitzers used by the Viet Minh were US captured from the first cavalry division by the chinese during the korean war. This was during the bugout from the yalu river. The Chinese kept the guns and gave them to Ho Chi Minhs guerrillas

The siege of Dien Bien Phu was begun after the French colonial armies had retreated there in 1954. The forces of the Viet Minh under General Giap surrounded the low ground position of the French Paratroops and the Foreign Legion. Poorly positioned in this swampy location the French troops had to be supplied by air, French and American air drops frequently went astray and were recovered by the Viet Minh. The French used air strikes against the Viet Minh positions,Forcing Gen.Giap to sequester his artillery in caves and dug out revetments on the hills overlooking (But having a clear field of fire against French positions.)thus these hidden
guns were very effective in keeping the French pinned down. Meanwhile in the United States Senate Sen.Lyndon Johnson was advocating direct American involvement on the French colonial side in this conflict. He Johnson even suggested that the U.S. drop a nuclear bomb on Hanoi, fortunately this was not done, but gives some indication of L.B.J.'s
obsession with Viet Nam.
