The afterburners pushing the jet faster in other words it is being pushed to the limit, going all out, full speed.

Yes, the afterburners. To activate them, you push the throttles forward to the stop, move them left--to the wall-- and then further forward to control the A/B. It came to represent an all out effort in any number of other activities, including flying without the benefit of afterburners. The connection with aircraft remains, but the connection to afterburners has apparently been lost--which I always thought was a very potent image of what the phrase has come to mean, as well as what it originally meant.

The action was moving the throttles to the side wall which activated the burners. The key word was afterburner. Whatever, I gave you a kudo for being the first to say the word.

I'm not sure what more of an answer you are looking for. There have been several variations of the correct answer all through this thread, but you said they were wrong, but actually they are right. [smile]https://i.tfster.com/tfs/images/smilies/confused3.gif">

It's a fighter pilot jargon. When you push the throttle all the way forward. The throttle levers are indicated by balls. I'm guessing that's what you mean.

She was the first to get it right. She didn't say 'afterburner' in her answer but she is still right. It's fighter pilot jargon and that is how it originated. You should give her a kudo!

That some people can give the right answer without using the word afterburner, sometimes it is easy to play the FNG
