I love my job and all...

But my schedule is unstable. There's no telling when I might get called in, which is a good thing bc I need the dough. This is a send money plea to tfs. Do you know what it's like to have zero in your bank account when rent is due in a few days. And no, it's not reckless overspending. It's actually not making enough to cover basic necessities. I make ten bucks an hour part time. I get anywhere from 12 to 30 hours per week. I'm trying to procure a second job, but the job market is hard hit by the recession.

Then there are the rich folks (anyone making over 25k) who goes shopping on weekends for fun. They can afford flat screen tv while my friends go to local food banks or use food stamps. I don't have any friends who are outside my social class and I avoid food banks like a plague bc I do what I can to preserve my dignity. I dream of the day when I might have whatever I want. Maybe a house and a better car that doesn't break down every couple months. Maybe I'll have health insurance, which my company offers but I can't afford the deductible.

That someday doesn't ever come, does it?

That sounds like you make about as much as I do. Not a whole lot to live off of. As bad as it sounds, you're probably going to have to swallow your pride and accept some of the help that is available to you. Food banks are not like eating out of a dumpster. They're nothing undignified about using them.

Allow your community to reach out to you. Those that are reaching will be blessed and so will you.

Do you not realise, that a HUGE majority of people that have all these nice things, go out to eat and take trips, don't REALLY have the money? It's called credit cards and it is all BORROWED money.

Many, many people are in debt(probably VERY close to losing all they have due to too many credit cards and their debt)and their friend/family have no clue.

This. I knew a family back when I was in school who used to dumpster dive. Suck it up and do what you need to in order to survive. If you have a roof over your head, you're doing good. I've been homeless a time or two. It's no fun. Quit d***ing around on the internet and do something with your miserable life.

Life aint easy and at the bottom its hard.

But it can change, my Job doesnt pay too well, but there is shift rate, plenty of well paid overtime.

Now I am paying my rent, saving up, got a car, paying for food, but a while ago, I thought this day would never come, when I was out of work and down.

Theres many people out there.

Of course even though things are on the up, I still stop and think sometimes, that I work harder than alot of people for less pay.

My trade is a dying one, so I had to go into something else, being out of work was hard for me, it took me back, to when I was growing up in my teens and my family had nothing, its not a place a wanted to return too, but circumstances made it that way.

its easy for people to say "get out there and do something", its when you get out there and you try and try and try and you still get nothing then someone in a comfortable position says "well you aint trying hard enough" I swear you feel like smashing their face in, you really do. Theres a mentality in the western world now that people with less money "dont try or work as hard", which is a complete myth, sometimes you working the hardest, while some lazy arse rich boy sits there judging you, talking about how the world works, I had a boss like it once, typical, "Some people just have to accept they've got to do anything to survive" and I am there thinking, you rich tw @t, from a wealthy family, Daddy handed down his business to you, you dont know Sh*t, you've never experianced anything and you're a money grabbing b @st@ rd.

I like nice things but I could not imagine putting myself in debt to buy things I could not really afford. I know people who live like this and the stress they are under is unbearable. They do not even learn because then they go and buy something else they do not even need.

Its sad when people feel they need to look a part they can't even afford and get in such debt.

And to the OP, if you really need help like to go to Food Bank or get help from a charity, its nothing to be ashamed of. Sometimes people need help and that is what its there for.

I don't trust IT with a credit card, you may have just given IT ideas though.

Ahh crap, true.

But the fact that IT can't keep a job for very long, I doubt IT would be able to get one.

There are many 'house poor' people than you will ever know. Why? Because they don't let society see the real class they actually belong to because of how society and friends/family will treat them if they knew the truth.

Never feel you are beneath anyone no matter your financial status and that's where you start gaining some respect from people who actually care about people more than they care about material crap.

In my opinion, the richer class may look down on the poorer class but the poorer class have way too much envy of the upper class. There are no classes to me, only classes of personalities and some have the understanding and compassion, some don't. Money and things has nor will it ever replace inner contentment. That is only accomplished when you accept who you are and what finances you have to work with. Content being poor? Yes! Content being middle class? Yes! Content being upper class? Yes! Now you can replace the 'yes' answers to 'NO' because it's all in the individual makeup and what type of person each one is.

If you really want to make more money, you have to pick a career, not a job that pays the bills. Figure out something that you really like and make finite goals within a 5 year span. Then, map out the necessary steps to reach those short term and long term goals.

An excellent way to start is by volunteering, or interning at a business you find interesting. I interned for several months with a restaurant that worked closely with the gospel center rescue mission in my town. I started doing marketing for the restaurant (for free) and the marketing for the rescue mission. Then when I started applying for jobs as a marketing coordinator or assistant, I had actual experience in the field to use to get the job. Right now I work part time as an interim communications specialist for a jazz institute, with a good chance of getting the full-time communications manager job they are creating in January.

I have made a goal to apply to at least 3 jobs a week during the summer, all of which require resumes, cover letters, and letters of recommendations. I cannot even tell you how disheartened I have felt applying for jobs that I am overqualified for. I applied for administrative assistant positions, marketing assistant positions, assistant to executive positions, mail room clerk positions, internships with talent agencies, and I have heard nothing back. I spent 4 years in the Marines as the Administrative Chief and Travel Manager of my unit, have a BA in Music Management, have my own fledgling entertainment company, have a couple years of retail management (a feed store, but a HUGE feedstore with 30 employees) and several good internships in my field already under my belt. I also paid a human resources manager to write my resume and cover letter for me, both of which I tweak to each position I apply for which (as I'm sure you know) takes a few hours to do properly. I've even made resume videos to submit with my cover letter. It is really tough out there, especially if you want to do something that receives hundreds of resumes because most of the time it never gets seen.

Just hold your head up and never stop trying. You will eventually get the job you want that pays what you want, as long as you are willing to work for it. Do not be afraid to be the squeaky wheel, be persistent when you ask for more hours. If you aren't doing it, I guarantee someone else is. Make yourself indispensable and more capable than your peers, and you will succeed.
