Really-Snakes?

Matthew 10:16 - “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.- When someone is studying Christianity, or is forming an opinion of it, they might be turned off by this scripture. The innocent as doves part Christ talks about here is understandable, but some might find it a little weird when he says to be as shrewd as snakes, after all the Bible doesn't say many good things about snakes. But upon more careful reading, it becomes clearer. He's not saying to take on all the features of snakes, just their shrewdness. I think that sometimes being shrewd is a necessity when Christians go out into the world where they often encounter unbelievers and false prophets who can be anywhere. It needs to be remembered that Christ used many teachable moments when he spoke, and I think this was one of them. Among the greatest things he said was “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"(John 14:6). Jesus didn't say I'm one of the ways or I think I'm the way, he said "I am THE way". He left his heavenly kingdom (John 1:1) and came here to save us from any sin we've ever committed even though we have most of the features of snakes. https://whataboutjesus.com

If I remember correctly (and honestly I seldom do) …nevertheless if I remember correctly the snakes of antiquity symbolized discernment, awareness and understanding. For example the snake in the Garden offered the ability to differentiate between good and evil.

I love religious metaphors.

Here is mine....

Once upon a time there was this super rich, powerful and loving guy (aka God).

One day he decided to get himself a "priceless" Persia rug (aka the earth). He loved that rug...it was beautiful.

Then one day God decided to get a pet, a cute little dog (aka humans). God so loved this puppy so much that he decided not to train and discipline it.

Almost immediately the dog decided that God's super beautiful rug was the perfect place to defecate.

God kindly told the puppy to stop defecating on his wonderful beautiful rug. The puppy ignored God's word.

As the puppy grew in to a very large dog and voracious dog he (the puppy) decided that he loved defecating on the rug more than God loved the rug. In fact, the puppy decided that the rug was his. He came up will all kinds of rationalizations and even wrote a manifesto supporting his right to defecate on the rug. He (the puppy) even blamed others for destroying the rug (including his wife and reptiles).

Eventually the dog, who had by now grown to a truly astounding and massive size, completely destroyed God's wonderful beautiful rug....destroyed it beyond any hope of repair.

God was a bit upset.

God threw the rug away and put the dog outside in a kennel. Periodically he (God) went out to the kennel and petted the dog, but he never forgot how his dog destroyed his wonderful rug.

God never trusted the dog with anything of value ever again.

Even when God came home from a hard day at the office he rarely went to see the dog, and when he did he was nice to it, but deep inside a mustard seed of resentment had germinated and begun to grow.

The end.

God told his son to clean the rug, but he joined a commune instead.

As to the dog-mirror thing... So you watched that movie also!
