Annoying
AAAAARRRRGGHHH!!
In the name of Religion
March 29, 2006 @ 03:04:41 pm

Right, I feel this one is gonna be rather controversial and it?s not Religion itself which annoys me but rather what people do in it?s name. Originally Religion was a great idea it bought people together in a way that nothing else could, but somewhere down the line it all got blurred and everyone decided that their take on it was the right one and everyone else were heretics and had to be forced to believe otherwise. The Romans were the first to do it when they persecuted the Christians and the Jews, then the Christians did it when the ordered the crusade against the Muslims, then Hitler did it to the Jews again and now the Jews and Christians are doing to the Muslims who are then doing it back. No single religion is the right one and when you boil it all down to the bare bones it?s all the same they all have one God and the same guy who came as his messenger the only thing that?s different are the names. Why kill in the name of something which is essentially the same, everyone should agree to follow the same message in their own way or in the case of some (such as myself) not at all. But to try and force your beliefs on others is just plain wrong and needs to stop.

In my opinion, the whole esscence and teachings of religion are lost in religious wars and it becomes a matter of who is right. How can a religion say it is wrong to kill a man, yet its so-called followers can murder in the name of thier God.

Of course in thier own eyes they are all right. And as you say, if it existed there would be only one divinity.

I have Mormans come to my door every month. I invite them in, let them state their case, and explain I don't agree. My husband used to get very annoyed by this. I explained to him that they really thought they were trying to save my sole, and I am always up for discussion. I don't envolve myself in the debate about what's right or wrong. I am what I am, and I believe what I believe. Allthough it is a christian thing for sure, I mean have you ever had a buddist or pagan at your door trying to "sell" you religion?

The problem with Christianity is that it is itself such a diverse religion that the different aspects of it seem to feel as though they have to have more members then the next as if they have to prove that the way the read the book was the right way. The way they do this is by going door to door to convince people to join them. Islam or Taoism isn?t as diverse so you don?t have this kind of ?inter house competion?.

This is incorrect actually.

Tao(dao) and islam ARE incredibly diverse, JUST as prone to sectism and scisms at the christian religion.

Buddhists have waged bloody wars against eachother over interpretations of texts, just as the christians and muslims have, but for some reason the buddhist wars haven't exactly been widely publisized.

And I ask you and everyone else again, have you ever had any one of an alternative faith (non christian) come bug you to join?

That is only one type of Christianity, you said your self it is diverse and now you are generalising.

without religion society would never have existed...seriously in the western world, even though you may not have practiced christianity the moral ethics of christianity, helping others, not stealing etc are still present in society.

Unfortunately it seems society can't exist without war, so religion is never too far from war.

Those are called morals, they are things that we teach are children. Religion is based on faith, morals being a part of that faith.

Also plenty of religions other than the christians do this door to door like preaching.

How many airport hare-krishna have you seen?
They seem to be everywhere *I* land.
The hindus simply belive that everybody IS hindu no matter WHAT you say.
Though I have never had a wicca come to my door and wish to preach me over into worshipping anything, I HAVE encountered them preaching at me at various "alternative bazaars" and whatnot. The only reason, in my opinion, they don't go door to door is because the christians would have them arrested faster than you can say "heretic".

In most western countries it seems to work like this:

Christians going door to door = spreading the word.
Pagans/others going door to door = scaring our innocent children into dark cults.

Pagans don't scare them into dark cults.

on this we agree cinnamin.

however, most western governments do not.

I was only trying to point at the incredible discrepancy between what the various religions are allowed to do, as a possible explentation as to why we see far more christian type religions do door-to-door than we see the pagans/others.
