Falling to Earth

Strange work my heart did today. My wife, son and daughter went down to the cities to visit family. I'm always worried when my kids are on the road. So, I'm watching the news in the way I did when my brother was in 'Nam. (Back then the local news would post the names of soldiers killed that day, and my mom stayed glued to the tv until she was sure all was right.) Then breaking news came on to say that the bridge they take over the Mississippi had collapsed. I have had a habit of b****ing about the price of our cell phone service, but being able to call my wife and know that everyone of mine were fine makes the price shrink to nothing. So sad that so many at this hour are trying to contact their own to no avail, knowing that something like 45-50 cars and trucks are at the bottom of the river with the search for survivors called off till dawn. Too many dead because our governor is a republican that has cut funding for bridge and road repair in order to cut taxes for those in the top five percent of the tax bracket. Better bitter than grieving.

Glad your family is okay but that bridge didn't collapse because of lack of funds.
If you haven't noticed but that bridge was in the process of being worked on like all bridges do over time.

In the last inspection three points of material fatigue were discovered but due to managerial pressures the bridge was declared structurally sound and not in need of repair or replacement. The work being done was to resurface the span only. This is the same as thinking that if your out of shape just change your clothes and everything will get better.

And that has nothing to do with Bush tax cuts since the roads are not paid for by those taxes. Roads and bridges get their funding mostly from gasoline taxes, vehicle registration taxes etc.
It is sad that people will use this disaster to take political cheap shots at a president they don't like when he did nothing to cause this.

Umm, I said governor. As in of our state. Who also killed a plan to raise the gas tax to help repair the states infrastructure. So sad when people can't read. Damn republicans cutting school funding.

Yes you are right you said governor. I saw republican and thought here we go again.
So are you telling me these gas tax cuts were only for the top 5% of the tax bracket? That is a neat trick. The first thing that would go are ancillary programs, not major bridge and road safety. Weather you are making the cheap shot at your governor or not, it is still a cheap shot.
As for school funding, republicans actually increased that on a national level.

Wow. Um. I did not say that gas taxes were cut for anyone. I said that he killed a gas tax increase. Presently there is a bill that the democratic congress has passed that would finally increase federal support for education in America. Prez Bush has said that he will veto any bill that raises funding for students. Yeah, Bush the republican. Also, is it a cheap shot to say "Hey,you! You let my family down and killed some of my neighbors to save your friends enough money to buy a new 3000. dollar purse"?

There is more federal funding to schools today then years past so I do not see your point. And how did your republican governor tax cuts that benefit the top 5% effect road and bridge taxes?
I reiterate, it is sad that people would use this disaster for political cheap shots when in all likelihood your governor's tax policies had nothing to do with it.
If you want to play partisan politics fine but please do not use a tragedy for some misguided political attack. When you do that you are no better than the republicans you hate because both parties do the same crap.

When a bad thing happens it's a good idea to wonder why and find out how. These are the first steps toward fixing the problem. In this case a bad thing happened in direct consequence to a bad decision made by a bad governor. It is not a cheap shot to say "The lion killed the zebra" if the lion killed the zebra.

This has to be one of the most ignorant posts I have had the "pleasure" of reading. First, do you have ANY proof that this proposed tax increase would have prevented this accident?

Second, Bush shouldn't have cut spending on education, he should have eliminated it completely. There is no reason that I should have to pay into a system that educates kids that are not mine. You choose to have them, you can either pay for 100% of their upbringing or go to jail for neglect.

Typical liberal crap. There was a tragedy and now lets scream for a tax increase. Because yanno throwing someone else's money will solve everything.

Then you believe in the war in Iraq as you are so hard core republican. I wonder, are you serving in the service now or do you just advocate that "we" fight them over there so "we" don't have to fight them over here?

No evidence that the tax increase would have prevented this?

The state was given a choice after inspections found the bridge to be defective, spend 3 million dollars to make required repairs or do nothing and increase inspections to once a year. The state, under Pawlenty, chose to do nothing. Bridge went boom. People died. New bridge will cost between 150. to 300. million dollars. Do you serve your country or just talk the talk?
