I started reading a book by someone who was in my sister's unit over in Iraq, it's called "Surviving Twilight" by Shane Bernskoetter. Read more below. This book details "Bernie's" experiences in Iraq, and wow, my sister did a great job at not telling my mom or me how often their camp was mortared. She had told us it was the most mortared camp in Iraq, but I guess it hadn't really set in what that really meant until I read this book. She always stayed positive, and even then I constantly worried about her. I'm glad I was oblivious to most of it while she was there but that I can read about it and get an understanding of what these soldiers are dealing with there now that she's home safe and sound, for which i'm very VERY grateful. There's a lot of heart wrenching parts but equally many funny parts that almost had me laughing out loud. So I'll leave it at that, I don't want to give much of it away, but there is one part in particular where the author was describing how he was overseeing the communications (internet and phones and stuff) and they started getting mortared, so they start hearing explosions and they all get down, people on the phones either just hung up or yelled "gotta go, bye" and then hung up and got down, and oh my god, i can't imagine being on the other end of one of those calls. On either end, really I guess. I dunno, this book tells you about a lot of stuff, some of which has been in the news and a lot that hasn't. I highly recommend it. |
