Somebody's joke made me think of this...
October 04, 2009 @ 04:56:00 am
A few years ago, my daughter (age 18) told me she thought we had mice in the house. She saw a "mouse" run past the counter to the back of the stove. I mentioned it to my boyfriend and he said probably so. Okay.

One night I heard what sounded like one of the cats furiously chowing down on dry cat food in the bowl on the kitchen floor. Curious I peeked around the doorway.

There was a very young Oppossum sitting at the cat food bowl. It was MUCH larger than a mouse. It didn't look like a mouse to me. But somehow my grown daughter and my grown boyfriend thought we had mice!!! (I wouldn't expect them to be confused)

Never knew how the Oppossum got inside the house and after a few days it went away on its own. I love animals so it was cute watching it for a little while. I could hear it in the kitchen late at night. Fortunately, our dog and cats realized it was a wild animal and stayed away.

That's an interesting story. You'd think they'd know the difference, huh. Grew up in the country, but don't have any memories of having any wild animals around our house. We had cats and dogs, and of course on the farm next door, there were all kinds of farm animals (cows, pigs, chickens). We did have a few mice/rats,
and spiders galore, and snakes if we walked in the wooded area.
Bats too, always protected our hair/heads, cuz we would be usually playing outside late at night, about the time the bats would be swooping around, and we didn't want them in our hair. I don't
think that is a myth!

My grandparents had a farm so critters don't bother me unless they're snakes. One in the cat bowl might make me close the bedroom door.

I wrote that my daughter was eighteen, but don't know if it came through right. In any case, I figured she was old enough to know the difference between a mouse and a young oppossum.

There was a baby one in my back yard the other night and my dogs went nuts! Those things look mean with their teeth bared.

Agreed that they don't like to be cornered or feel threatened. But if you can just observe them from a safe distance, they mind their own business.
