Liquor store ethnicity guessing game
February 09, 2013 @ 08:06:42 am
My mom and I were checking out at a liquor store and the friendly clerk decided to play the ethnicity guessing game.

clerk: Are you Chinese?
mom: No...
clerk: Oh. Filipino?
mom: No...
clerk: Korean?
mom: No, we're Japanese.
clerk: Ohhh...five dollars please.

Although some may argue that it's not good to talk about others' ethnic background, I think it's actually pretty fun guessing others' ancestry. I just don't get why no one ever guesses "Japanese". I supposedly have a stereotypically Japanese face.

When it comes to PC its a no no. Although to be fair you can argue its none of their business. But if no harms meant by it I dont see the big deal.

Depending on how you read that conversation, it sounds like the cashier adjusted the price based on you being Japanese!

Used to have a kebab van like that in Derby, depending where in the country you were from, the more, or less you would get charged. They never actually had an official price list.

Took me a while to twig on to what was happening. But once I found out, I learnt to say I was originally from Derby. Then I would laugh as the southerners got charged twice as much.
