I don't think that self-harm is a "fad." It's been going on forever, many forms of it being recorded in history, and it'll probably--and unfortunately--continue.
The only 'fad' thing about it is a group/clique of people that might be more apt to self-harm than others, although individuals from all sorts of different back grounds inflict pain on themselves in various ways.
I think helping someone get over harming themselves is extremely difficult, and must be handled on an individual basis. What makes Katie cut herself is different from the internal motivation of John beating himself. You can't just plug people into some generalized formula or whatever.
I'm sorry that you had to go through losing your best friend. That must of been such a huge shock, and I praise you for being able to overcome your own destructive pattern of inflicting pain on yourself. It's understandable that you were upset when you caught your other friend self-hurting, too, but you might want to talk to them now. Perhaps if you told them your own story about self-hurting, that might help.
I hope that everything gets better for you.

I dunno, its all teens go on about now days ' im depressed so im gonna top/harm myself ' it seems the norm now like its something to be proud of.
Sorry you lost your mate but self harming isnt going to make the pain any better is it?
Emotional pain, physical pain...still hurts at the end of the day and swapping one for the other isnt the answer.
Also imagine how your friend, parents etc are gonna feel when they find out you do that s***...it all has a knock on effect.

He must also be shocked from the loss of sarah, talk to him and im sure he can get his feeling out in the air without the need to self-harm. You sohlud also keep yourself safe ash sweety. I know its tough to get over a loss of a friend or family but talk about it.
