every year the F111 fighter jets come to Townsville for training exercises - they are sooooo loud but kinda cool - i know they're weapons of war and are probably not real cool for that fact but they are the most impressive machines i've ever seen.
it's cool driving passed the airport and seeing cars parked with mums and dads with their kids right under the flight path watching the jets come in overhead to land
a couple of years back at dusk on the last day of exercises - as they were leaving - their squadron leader flew low over The Strand (Townsvilles beachfront hub) and threw on the after-burners as a goodbye to the town - probably the most spectacular thing I've ever seen
ther really are some cool advantages to living in a garrison town
They are fantastic, they give you a thrill,i remember several years ago i was out at Mount Kaputar and out of nowhere one flew over,we waved to him but they go so fast we didn`t think he seen us,he turned around flew lower and dipped his wings at us...we were stoked. When i lived in Darwin the paper always announced if there was flight practise and everyone would go down and sit on the beach and they would give a bit of a show.
I love the F111's. I always loved the jets when I was little. We have a few of them flying round lately, my local RAAF base is having an open day this weekend so they're all out and about
yeah, worked out today that instead of flying them up here individually (from Amberly Air Base down South I guess??) they're bringing them up en masse in these MASSIVE battleship grey cargo planes - HUGE dull-grey things lumbering low through the sky - and the noise of the engines labouring under the weight of the cargo - wow - you can hear them coming like a minute before you can see them.
i love this time of year (even if we do get the occassional cyclone)
8) cruisin mate..no probs....good about the arm...
yeh those jets hey...i lived on the side of castle hill there on the northside...amazing views at times....and through a mate, we had a burn over our house...(nudge nudge wink wink)totally blown away...quite an expreience...nearly took the roof off...blew out a couple of windows...but it was a good laugh..at the time...
and some incredible views before the high rises went up and blocked off magnetic island i see..
