draft of article on Angostura
March 01, 2011 @ 12:29:36 pm
I know i'm a bit late in commemting on the recent facelift of Angostura's main lines of rums.

i don;t think anyone has commended this strategy at all and i've actually seen people wondering hoesome of these ads could have even left the creative department or got approved.

It's obvious that a fair amount of work went into these ads; but what's the point of a well made advertising campaign that wll do nothing.

Sure sales would go up, but that's only because of the sheer scale in the increase in advertising and the sexualitly of the initial launch, as well as the fact that the rebranding effort coincides with Christmas and Carnival.

Angostura attempts to compare their high end rum with Johnny Walker Scotch whiskey and Black and WHite Scotch Whiskey- in many other countries this comparison may not have fell on deaf ears.

Consumer's may have reasoned that Angostura Single Barrel Rum has a smooth rich taste, and being made from sugar cane is quite sweeter than whiskey.

Angostura fails to realize that in Trinidad, the previously mentioned brands of Scotch are pursued simply for their brand name and not for taste and quality.

Other brands of Whiskey that are often much better fare terribly against Johnny Walker and Black and White with Trinidadian consumers.

Johnny Walker whiskey is a Veblen good with tremendous brand loyalty, there advertisements are among some of the best ever created and they plow millions annually into creating amazing ads.

How could Angostura fight amazing ads likethis...... with their stupid billboards.

on a blog, i noticed some copy writer claim that the ads arent funny..... i disagree, thy're funny- but funny like the class clown who noone likes.

Yeah they laugh at his wisecracks, but does anyone invite him to the school dance?

The other stupid thing about these ads relates to the bottles.

Across many genres of liquors, distillers utilize different bottles to differentiate between their flagship products and their cheap booze.

it gives a good a certain classiness that warrents the high price they're charging.

What i fail to grasp is why Angostura has bottled their 2 best rums (rums that once came in cannisters) in exactly the same way that they bottle puncheon................ and yet expect consumers to treat the rum like an expensive whiskey????????
