ANOTHER christmas wondering whether I'll have a job
September 09, 2009 @ 08:36:19 am
Another corporate change. Another Xmas where I'll be on tender-hooks wondering whether I'll have my own job Jan 1.

I shouldn't complain I guess. There are so many people wondering day to day whether they will have their job tomorrow worldwide. But our company have pulled this s*** since 2004. Every Christmas since 2004 we've either had to re-interview for our jobs or wait to be told.

Oh Lord, I'm so tired.......

If/when they interview me, I'm so tempted to say "Where do I see myself in 5 years? Hopefully not working at all. Hopefully with enough money to be sun-baking on my own yacht in the carrabean not thinking about you at all."

I'm only 39 and I am so tired of working.

Oh, I really hope you can keep your job. Losing one is a very scary thing. Does the company usually let people go if they don't have seniority?

I don't think work is like what our parents did. My dad is 51, and he has had the same job since he was 16. Give or take a name change. He doesn't know what its like to have to face redundancy and told to re interview. He tells me I need to get a job I can stay in for years... it don't exist, companies want you body and soul...

Retrenchments seem pretty random actually at my work. More geographical than sensible, if anything.

I have been there 10 years. if they retrench me it will cost them a fortune. Still....

It's true. 50 years ago there was respectability in staying with the same firm your whole life.

It's said now that skills-wise, you actually go backwards if you stay with the same firm for more than 7 years - & that future employers see you as not being a risk-taker.

I hope that you get to stay on. I could not imagine the stress knowing each year you are reinterviewed. But who does that at Christmas time? I know business does not care but it's cold.
