Today, I finally went to see my folks. They live in Zone A and it is a week now that they have lights. Because of how far the trains would run, I didn't go last weekend. Everything is back to normal, but there are other surrounding areas in the neighborhood that still do not have electricity or heat. The death toll went up two more people this week in my sister's neighborhood. One person was 101 years old and the other over 90, complications to their health due to the hurricane that passed. Their basic needs did not get to them in time. Tragic....
There are people in Jersey and Staten Island who still have their homes, yet no electricity. they can't leave their homes to go with relatives because of looters. Those people are every where. The nerve of people looking for opportunities due to the misfortunes of others. People like that do not get very far. There have been arrests. The alarm has been sounded against people looking to swindle money from people hoping to make a difference by donating. They promise to deliver but keep the cash for themselves. You have to literally get what is needed and donate. Shame, but what can anybody do?
Aside from all that, there were people making a difference. Many people have been coming from all over to help in the relief efforts. It is amazing. |
