To be or not to be a vegetarian?
December 02, 2011 @ 09:22:45 pm

I've been a vegetarian since I was 12/13 years old, I think I've done pretty well refraining from meat now that I'm 17.
I'm in a bit of a dilema. I like being a vegetarian, it's an interesting conversational starter and I like discussing my vegetarianism with people, but it's lost its magic for me. I've grown tired of eating the same foods every day and I've recently being getting really bad 'meat cravings'. I'm scared to go back to being an omnivore purely for the fact there's a chance I could get ill from not being used to eating meat for so long. I've talked it over with my mum and she said slowly introducing meat back into my diet is probably a better idea than popping into McDonalds and buying a double cheeseburger.
However, I know this is pretty silly, but I'm scared of what others will think of me once I tell them I'm not a vegetarian anymore. I keep worrying that not being a vegetarian anymore makes me a bad person. Help?

So eat meat. It's good for you and natural.

Examine the reasons you are a vegetarian.

Of course it won't make you a bad person. Why should you stick to a principle that just isn't right for you any more- to whatever degree. Life is too short to do waht other people expect just to placate them, you must do what you want to do

A friend of mine that I have known from college, just recently stopped being a vegetarian. I've known him for 12 yrs and he was a vegetarian long before I met him. I don't think any less of him because he has changed his eating habits.

Your mom's idea is a good one, but you don't have to take it any farther than just eating a little bit of meat. There are a lot of people who have meat as a side dish and make the bulk of their meal out of ...non-meat.

My son and dau-in-law are (were) vegetarians. First they learned that their children needed some meat for good nutrition growing up. Then, at about the same time, both their doctors told them they needed to eat some meat. It has stuff in there you just can't get on a vegetarian diet--and they ate dairy and eggs. (I think it could have been causing her headaches, but I'm reserved in my comments, don't want to......its a political issue). Reluctantly, 2 years ago, they started eating fish. Since then things have been much better.

I tried to talk them into poultry (what's the diff between a turkey's IQ and a trout's) but to no avail. Poultry is the most versatile meat there is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating eagle or buzzard. Something funny I just thought of, the subject of reptile meat has never come up. They could farm raise gators just like salmon couldn't they?

No one needs to eat meat. The fact that the OP hasn't eaten meat in 5 years and is perfectly healthy is pretty good evidence of that.

Tell that to their doctors. I don't have the particulars, but it must have been pretty convincing since it was almost like a religion to them. And the need for meat for growing children is pretty well accepted. It stands to reason. We've been omnivores for eons. Our DNA probably accommodated or actually developed to what we are as a result.

There are lots and lots of vegan doctors. And vegan professional athletes, and vegan nutritionists, and vegan everything else you can think of.

You are simply misinformed. No one needs to eat meat. Period. Get over it.

BTW, doctors in general know very little about mainstream nutrition and nothing whatsoever about non-mainstream nutrition unless they specialize in it. GPs and internists for the most part know less about human nutrition than the well-informed layman.

Life is too short to deprive oneself of real food just to be one of the "in" crowd. Lots of meat eaters are healthy and athletic too. Food enjoyment is important too. Personally, I don't enjoy grazing, but that's just me.
