The US Navy was the first in the world to commission
submarines,with this boat the Holland VI in 1900,
The Holland VI was only 53 ft. long and ten ft. wide at the beam! It had but one torpedo tube and could carry only one torpedo!
It was the invention of Irish-American inventor John Phillip Holland,he is credited with the invention of the modern submarine.
He is also the founder of the Electric Boat Company of New London Connecticut. He sold his "Holland Boats" to Great Britain (Holland 1) which was restored and still exists, and is in the Royal Navy's submarine museum,in Portsmouth. And to the Japanese!
