Yesterday, my lovely wife officiated in her first match since qualifying as a rugby referee a few weeks ago. She was as nervous as hell but Megan and I watched on the touchline so she knew she had at least two friends in the crowd. lol.
She's wanted to do this for some time but has been working her socks off to pay the bills while I've been a stay-at-home mum these last six or so years. I'll be going back to work in the new year so she can relax a little now and do something she's wanted to do for a long time.
Her first game was a women's club match in Helston. Not the most demanding of fixtures but there are still a few players who think referees have never played the game and don't know what goes on in the ruck and maul. Big mistake.
But it was a lot of fun, she enjoyed herself and we had a good time in the club after the game. I was on driving duty so couldn't have a drink, but Amanda enjoyed the club's, er, 'hospitality'. In Rugby, referees are held in high esteem and get well looked after in a social sense, if you know what I mean.
What do you need to be a rugby referee..? Well, you need knowledge of the laws and experience of the game. You also need eyes in the back of your head, a sense of humour and a thick skin. Rugby is a great leveller. Male and 0female players alike think they can get away with all sorts of skulduggery. BBeing refereed by a former back row forward who knows all the 'dark arts' soon ddisabused them of that foolish notion.
Megan thinks Mama looks silly running around in those shorts. I think she looks kinda cute.
She's got another game next Saturday. This time, at our local club where we are members. Oh, she is so going to get a ribbing from everybody who knows us.
Damn.......... I love rugby.
