If psychiatric care was more available (affordable) and less stigmatizing, these types of "conditions" may be manageable so that they are never acted upon.
But then we start down a slippery slope of all kinds of moral vs social arguments.
I could see arguments that attraction to children at its basest form is no different than attraction to someone of the same sex. "you can't control who you love"
It is merely societal norms that makes one unacceptable and the other - at least starting to be acceptable.

Pedophilia has no cure
Pedophilia is a disorder of sexual preference similar to a homosexual or heterosexual orientation.
The difference between or heterosexual ordination, homosexual orientation and pedophilia are that pedophilia causes harm.
Causing unnecessary harm is, by my definition, evil.
Maybe a pedophile is like a drug addict who can remain clean for an extended period of time but is always an addict. In order to avoid temptation addicts should not be around drugs. And in order to avoid temptation the pedophile should not be around children.

It might, per chance, be "supported" by some inane biological cerebral disconnect... genetic crossing of wires.... none the less, it is a mental illness, a psychosis.... it is abhorrent.... sadly there is no cure... but there are possible controls, responses and punishments... the "punishments", of course, mean nothing to the pedophile as that is what started "it" in the first place...
"It" is about control and gratification... displayed on a sexual level. |

I see no point in punishing a person for being mentally ill.
once upon a time leprosy was a problem. Lepors were not punished for having a disease. They were sent to leper colonies where they could no contaminate anyone.

I think that one of the problems is that "we" don't know that someone is mentally ill until they do something that demonstrates the mental illness.
In the case of the pedophile, there could be many walking around who just control their behavior... their mind knows it is a crime, so the resist. Somewhat like an alcoholic resisting alcohol.
Once the person acts on "his" pedophile desires, "he" has violated the law. We can't just not hold that person accountable.
Even if there was some island to put them on, would they willingly go and willingly stay? |

Isn't that just another form of incarceration?
Before or after they act out?
If it's before (i.e. after diagnosis, but before committing a crime) then you are punishing for thought crimes. |

They are mentally ill but cannot use an insanity defense
They do not get better
when released from prison they go to a pedophile colony that is not a prison or at least a minimal security to keep them in and others out.
A community with no guards or cells. Housing, food, an occupation.
Better than a mental institution.
