Fire

So we had a fire last night. Lights flashing, a horns blaring, sirens sirening. I grabbed my cat and headed to the exit. It was snowing so I sat just inside the exit door. People filed out of the building. A couple had a cat with them, several were caring their lap tops and one old guy had a bible. Why he would save a bible is beyond me. A new one would cost very little and some places give them away.
Anyway the fire was confined to a laundry room and was soon extinguished. A small adventure but nonetheless an adventure. My question is, if you were leaving a burning building and could only take one thing with you, what would you take?

Assuming you mean an object and not a relative, pet or other loved one, I think I would grab the little box in a drawer that holds all our important documents. Birth certificates... passports.... marriage certificates, etc.

Not very romantic. All very practical. But in that sort of situation, I think that way.

Later on, when everything has gone up in blazes and I've had time to think about it, I'll wish I'd saved my guitar instead.

Assuming the clothes I'm wearing and my girlfriend don't count...

I would probably grab my camera bag (looks much like a back pack)... that contains our Nikon cameras, lenses, memory cards and external hard drive (which contains computer back-up, various important personal/financial files, and in excess of 10,000 photographs). The bag is already packed so i would be grabbing it as I existed the apartment & building.

If the "rules" of your question are more limiting (like I can't take the whole camera bag, but only one thing) the external hard drive would win as insurance would replace everything else.

My girlfriend would be grabbing our cat... throwing it out the window so we could recover it later, and then (probably) grabbing either her computer or jewelry box. If the building is too high to toss our cat out the window, the cat would win.

Our cats would have done a bunk at the first niff of smoke and they sure as hell wouldn't have come back for us..!!

Cats are survivors.
