| The Hawker Hurricane was the first monoplane fighter adopted by the RAF. The first monoplane fighter plane flown by the RAF, more than 5,000 were built. It soldiered on practically alone during the early stages of the Battle of Britain, until the number of Spitfires were increased.
The Hurricanes had some design shortcomings that made it less effective than the Spitfire, inspite of both being powered by the superb Rolls Royce Merlin engine! One of these shortcomings was the three bladed wooden static pitch propeller, whereas Spits had metal variable pitch props, but Hurricanes had their propellers replaced with metal ones before the battle of Britain commenced. Spitfires because of this and other factors were faster than the Hurricane! And the Spitfire had stressed metal skin, while the Hurricane still used fabric,to cover parts of the fuselage. Also Spitfires had the perspex canopy (a British innovation) that allowed the Spits to have pressureised cockpits, allowing them to climb to higher altitudes! |
