The superb Spitfire had one flaw, it was conventionally aspirated with carberators, on the other hand the German fighters were fuel injected. This caused Spits to stall during climbs and dives.

Yes, the RollsRoyce company granted a license to North American aircraft company to build the Merlin engine. They in turn liscensed the Packard Motorcar company to build the Merlins! Used in the P51 Mustang, the P51 had a large fuel capacity and utilised drop tanks, giving it extra range. With the addition of a perspex canopy, allowing for pressurisation. After the improved P51s began escorting bombers into Europe they were able to provide air cover to the bombers all the way to Berlin and back for the first time. This was a major turning point in the air war!

We have a museum here in Southern California, The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. It's full of bones, rocks, stuffed birds, and such. If you watch Bones, the television show; you might have seen the museum building, which the television show uses for the fictional Jeffersonian building in the show. The museum also has a collection of artifacts, like airplane engines. They have an airplane engine from an airplane that flew around the world a couple of years before Lindbergh. They have a Merlin Engine from, I think, a P-51. The exhibit says something about it being used first in the Spitfire.

Yes the Supermarine sea plane was a racing plane from the 30s.
I considered putting that picture in this morning. But selected USS Hornet instead. The next picture,I promise!

The Spitfire was not originally designed as a fighter plane. I was built for speed, and its orininal colour was bright red with a white stipe round the sides.
Then some bright spark had the idea to mount guns on it.

From what I've read and seen on Doco's the 109 had another serious problem in the way of the wheels being to close together ,more pilots had them fall over when taxi'ing than there was got shot down,Fact of fiction I don't know .

Planning to include pic of Hurricane when I get more points. But of course you are correct!
Both planes were powered by the Merlin engine, but Spits were faster.
The Spitfire had a feature that made it more effective against the Messerschmidt BF 109,that was that its fuel pump was gimbel mounted and would remain in proper position while performing loops or flying inverted. The Me's
fuel pump remained static preventing it from doing those maneuvers!
If a Me tried either it would go into a stall!

The Spitfire one of the best fighter planes of the second War,and the heroic fighter plane of the Battle of Britain in 1940!
Hermann Goering, when asked what he would need to gain air superiority, replied "A few squadrons of Spitfires!"
