So, your USB stick has an ethernet port,.... Interesting.

What brand motherboard are you using?

MS doesn't support '98 so therefor Updates won't detect updates for it but if you go to the manufacture's site for your mother board they should, hopefully, still have the drivers that you're looking for.

Freeware utility software like Advanced System Care can read and list all of the equipment on your PC and provide you with company names.

I take it you're trying to run System Shock or Redguard.

You know about compatibility mode, where you can tell your newer Windows OS to emulate older OS's, right?

If not it can be accessed through properties on the context menu brought up from right clicking the executable of the program that you're attempting to run.

I'm suspecting that he's using the USB to by-pass his newer OS and boot Win 98.

Why would anyone want to use Windows 98?

As for the OP, I'm not sure but my side hobby is getting old games working.

Even with the Compatibility Mode option some older titles such System Shock, Meat Puppet and Redguard require the actual '98 OS to run properly with the least amount of hassle.

I am a bit worried though - this got me to thinking. I don't like Vista or Win 7 and wanted to hang onto my XP for as long as I could but if XP support discontinues in 2014 - My XP disc only installs me back to SP2 and I've heard that MS never released a completely updated XP on hard copy.

I have no idea why you're trying to do this, but if you're using modern hardware there may very well not exist a Win98-compatible driver.

Very little modern software that accesses the internet will run on Windows 98 either.

What are you trying to accomplish, and what NIC are you using?

There may be truth to your suspicions, but that is NOT what he said.

Yeah, the only reason that I could assume that OP would want to access the net using 98 is to authenticate 98 during it's boot - which most people just usually use a crack to remove the authentication request.

Other than that, perhaps to start a server for old multi-player games. In that instance I think there is some free software written specifically for such instances especially with the popularity of GOG.

You are going to have more problems with that ancient OS than it's worth the trouble. Not even Microsoft® is supporting it since about 2005. Get XP on it instead.

I believe support for Windows 98 ended June 2006.
As the years go by there is less support online. This may include third party sites.

I have a few online friends who still use 98.They have rebooted and restored their systems more than 6 times.
However...they still have their quick restore software which keeps them going.
The down side is more sites are being updated which prompts upgrades of explorers(5.5 and 6.0)to the latest.

Down the road the 98 users will have to upgrade.

There is a work around. Altho it depends on how powerful your PC is. Setup a Virtaul Machine, then install Windows 98 onto that. You will not need all the drivers as such if you do it that way.

I run LINUX on a VM as my laptop Wifi card wont install on LINUX. But using a VM its all taken care of my windows and OpenBox.

But you will need a power setup or a decent server to use a VM effectively. I have 4 servers running on my laptop as well as the host OS and its a bit slow. Plus a couple of virtual routers and a hardware firewall, but thats just an old PC, physically connected.
