My good freind announced to me that her 17 year old daughter is 13 weeks pregnant. Her daughter is a champion barrell racer and will be going to the Worlds. If it's calculated, she will have the baby 1 week before she goes down to the states. I spoke to my friend and voiced my concerns with her teen daughter riding throughout her pregnancy. She's a good rider and she rides fast and hard!!!! I'm really surprised that my girlfriend would let her teen daughter ride her horse everyday. Does anybody know how it can put this unborn baby in danger? I would think it could be dangerous for the expectant teen Mom as well. Does anybody on tfs ride horses, or rode through your pregnancy? Again...13 WEEKS!!!!!!

Yeah, sounds like horse riding should be the least of her concerns

Shaken Baby Syndrome I would imagine would be a concern.

Along with brain damage & the baby turning the wrong way before being due can really cause issues.

Hopefully it's 13 WEEKS.

I was told by an OBGYN that if the expecting mother does certain activities BEFORE she was pregnant(yoga, running), the baby is pretty safe since the mothers body is used to the movements/activities. I'd say that by the time she is 3months it would be best for her to stop riding, since riding consists of a lot more jarring, bouncing and movement that could be strenuous/dangerous for the baby.

One little typo and no question answered. I didn't ride at all until 16 weeks and stopped 2 mos. before due. I'm a strong western rider, so the saddles are sturdier, but it sounds foolish. I did go for rides at a very slow pace at the end but no barrel nonsense.

I read on a site that anything that would throw the mother's center of balance off is a bad idea.

For the sake of the baby's safety, I would say that the type of riding she does is just not safe during pregnancy! Too much risk.

and even so, not saying all horses do, but they get spooked easy, do you really wanna chance the horse throwing her off & hurting her or the child during pregnancy?

Maybe I've just heard of a lot of horse accidents lately but... maybe it would be best just bare avoiding the ordeal until after the babies come?

And realistically, if the baby is due only ONE WEEK before the world championship, she's incredibly unlikely to be up to competing anyway. Probably best to call the year a wash and go for it next year
