my mum has just had tests becuase she has been ill for a while, lost lots of weight ect... and a scan has revealed a shadow at the bottom of her lung.

the doctors have provisionally warned her that it could be lung cancer, but explained that it looks at a real early stage so may be treatable. they want to obviously investigate further, and have explained to my mum some options, including taking away the affecting part of the lung, they claim that this procedure is quite successful and only defect will be reduced lung capacity, that is if they can get to the cancer before it spreads elswhere.

has anyone else been through or has had a family member go through this procedure? any advice welcome

(both my mums parents died of lung cancer, all smoked-is this a genetic defect we all carry, should me and my sister go for checks, we both do not smoke?)

Im sorry to hear that.

Im not sure if it is genetic, I was just googling it, havent found anything yet.
According to one link I read, in 2004 they were doing studies to try and figure that out.

"They have discovered an inherited genetic region on the human chromosome number 6 that is linked with lung and other tobacco related cancers. This discovery is the first major step in finding the underlying biological malfunctions for the most fatal form of cancer."

Go to your GP and ask about whether its worth getting genetic counselling.

Wait and see what the diagnosis is first. Shadow on the lung could be a few other things but obviously Doctor has prepared you all for the worst case scenario which is the correct thing to do.

I hope it isnt cancer but if it is get in touch with the Macmillan Nurses who will give you all the information you need and support.

My grandad had lung cancer, he had his left lung removed and went on quite happily for another 25 years, he had to be careful when he caught colds and stuff and got breathless more quickly but he coped amazingly well condisering he was only given a life expectancy of 7 years after the op.

Tree's right shdows could mean anything.

I hope your mum's ok

There are certainly treatments available but I also agree with treebee - a shadow on the lung in an x-ray could mean anything. If it is lung cancer I would expect the treatment/surgery would be quite aggressive. I also know of people who have had an entire lung removed and lived on to a long life.
I hope that you get some news soon hinckley as I can only imagine how worried you must be. It's the not knowing that makes situations like this so upsetting.
My thought are with you and your family Hinckley, and my prayers too.

many thanks to those posting me pm's, appreciated.

the worst thing is the waiting game to find out whats what, they prepare people for the worse case scenario, i hope it is not, but the posts above of people who have known others who have had lungs or part of removed, and survived and lived a reasonably normal life, has boyed my spirits, thankyou, sincerely.

My Ex-Father in law had lung cancer, got it removed and they found a spot in the other and told him he wouldn't survive past 6 months. He was telling me this 15 years after they told him he didn't have longer than 6 months and he's still going..

Hope all goes well for your Mother,Family,Friends and she pulls through this very hard and stressful time...

Yes, you and your sister should have regular checkups starting immediately. Help your mum keep a positive attitude. It means so much. I'm praying for her and your family. This is a tough thing and it's one step at a time. Blessings, bybee

Just stay strong even if it's cancer as it's not that she cant be treated very successfully
stay strong for your Mum + try + not let her see u being worried

I lost my Dad eventually after a long illness with 2 brain tumour's at the end

but he had several heart attack's 5 yrs previously + then luckily for him my Mum was in house when he took another + sent for Dr whom left mum a note + told her to fone the ambulance which she did + ambulance came + straight away took Dad to Hospital where as soon as he was being all wired up to the monitor he took a massive Heart-attack

the female Dr whom was the top Dr to do with such told myself + Mum that next 24 hrs would be crucial that they had to bring Dad back with a Defliberator
but Dad pulled through it ok + few days approx later he was back out + home + was on all these pills for thinning blood + approx 6 different type's of pill's
as well as on a Diet + stopped smoking as he smoked all his days

Anyhow he seemed ok that way with his Heart but 4 yrs later he was scanned + found to have Colon cancer where Dr
said we'd like to operate
but it's a big op + have to check his heart out for 2 days to see if he'd be strong enough for the op + as they couldnt give him chemotherapy because of his Heart
condition

anyhow they went ahead with the op + the Surgeon told my Mum that he got out all he could but there was the slightest bit he couldnt get to

anyhow Dad was in Hospital
for a we while around 2 wks think now it was approx
then let out + he done away best he could but wasnt quite the same after the op didnt have a bag after the op

but Dr did say without op he wouldnt last to long

Anyhow 4 yrs later after the op
he had a scan on his lung's + was found cancer on his lung
he came home + went a mth or so approx later to get radiotherapy he just got the 2 bouts of that
which helped him breath slightly better + to help a bit

but he later while in house began falling on the floor just like a drunk + was trying to get up to go to toilet to be sick + just made toilet
though mum had went for a bowl
anyhow Mum foned ambulance + they got him to Hospital + then they scanned his brain which showed he had not 1 but 2 brain tumours
Dr said 1 tumour was quite unusual that was in the back of his head + was quite large + other was in side of his head but not as large
he went on + told us there's nothing they could do + that dad had just so long to live + i was very close to my Dad
just found it hard though
i thought the inevitable would eventually come

they had my Dad on morphine as per norm + also put him on
steroid's which is used to just keep them stronger

so as they can speak etc
but eventually the Dr asked us if we would want Dad to be kept alive for so long on a machine

but none of us wanted that as
Dr he couldnt keep him on steroid's indefinately + told us he soon shall cut him down on the steroid's
then Dad would go into like a deep sleep
with heavy breathing then the breathing would become more shallow until he passes away

What i did not like when in the room where Dad was in bed
was this Girl (women) whom was to do with cancer patients as we told the Drs etc we did not want
my Dad to know he was dying as he would have worried about such
but this women looked up at clock above my Dads bed where myself + Mum were situated + then looked at her watch + said while my Dad was still breathig Heavily she said
I thought i'd now tell you that (my Dads 1st name) is now on the road to his death her words) she then left the room

Myself i didnt like her saying such asked her how long will
he live for she said can be a day can be a wk a mth
but reckon more like say 2 days approx
anyhow following day when i was with Mum just sitting there
at side of Dads bed Mum was obviously Knackered + we couldnt speak to dad Mum left + i wouldnt leave + stayed +
held my Dads hand + said Dad if u hear me squeeze my hand to which no respond though i tried this several times
then after i said such again i looked into his face + it was as if he was trying to speak as very slightly his lip would move but he couldnt get the words out while breathing still quite heavy

it still makes me wonder if he heard what that women said
above as we didnt want Dad to know + i thought because we told the Drs + the surgeon at the time i thought this was wrong of her saying such yet Dad couldnt correspond
as such
anyhow i left Dad at 4.50pm

then my sister had got a call that he Dad was Deteriorating at 6.20pmish approx
my brother in Law arrived took me in to Hospital straight away my Aunty was at bedside + told me
Dad had not long Died just before she got into Hospital

It's just that Women saying such i cant get away from
as she i even seen a wk or so earlier peak into a room where the Dr gave us the bad news that Dad had just so long to live.

Anyhow it's 3 + have yrs now + how time fly's
but i still have memories + i also know how lucky Dad was after taking the massive Heart-attack

lucky he was in Hospital at that time or he may have died that day
he told me he remembered nothing when on the Hospital bed the Drs at the time brought him back with a defribilator that day

But i still cant get out of my head about that women saying such
apart from that i am doing away as one can + taking up new hobbies to keep the mind occupied

Your mum im sure shall be fine ok it is completely different + just dont worry + keep strong.
