i've moved to Idaho Falls, ID.. about 2 months ago.. i was warned by one of our department secretary to watch out for a local spider called Hobos ..

They are apparently ugly, the female has a large butt, and this spider has very long legs, and antennae.

folks in our area even set sticky traps for them..

Last night, i was working in the ER, and sure enough, a patient came in after being bit by a "Hobo".. it left a large, ulcerated wound on his leg. Every time i HAD to touch it, he said he felt i was hitting the bite area with a hammer. Apparently, the bite is necrotizing, and extremely painful.. gawd, i felt horrible for the guy because i had to get lab samples from the bite area.

Apparently, when these spiders bite, the person doesn't feel it until later when the venom sets in.

Any other exclusive insects to your areas? especially the UK?

One thing I love about Southern California is that it is one of the few major US regions free of mosquitos in the summer.

I'm so jealous! We will probably have monster mosquitoes (apparently the correct pluralization...who knew? ) this year. I haven't seen many yet, maybe because it's still so cold, but the larva are gigantic.

Are you near the coast of Washington, or inland?

Do the mosquitos get near the coast, like Seattle (if you know)? I am just wondering how it is along the western coast north of here.

I love Washington, and wouldn't mind moving there someday. Especially if I cannot get another teaching job down here.

Hmm well...Seattle is not near the coast really. And, that's a place that I avoid like the plague. You'd probably be better off asking aceuvclubs that question. He lives in Seattle.

However, everywhere that I've lived in Washington has had mosquitoes.

Traffic mostly. I don't care for cities.

Ah, okay, so you are a country gal.

I would probably go crazy if I were too isolated.

And, speaking of traffic, compared to here, I might even find Seattle akin to a Sunday afternoon drive.

But I may not be able to get used to all the rain. I suppose there are pros and cons to just about everywhere lol.

Sorry about that.I just had to know what you were talking about because I had never even heard of a Hobo spider until I read this post.

And as for having any unique insects in our area...I don't know.
