tomorrow, and i'm scared to death that i'm not going to be able to train it. i've never trained a dog before, and i've been reading dog training books. but since it has come down to the day to get my dog, i'm scared s***less! what if my dog tries to bolt out the door every time i leave, and doesn't listen to "no" or what if i can hardly control him on a leash and it frustrates me to the point where i don't take him for walks? i'm thinking of all this and getting paranoid, because i really really don't want a untrained dog. has anyone had any experience in training and have any advice?

omg! thank you so much for rescuing and you WON'T be diappointed. just ble vigilant. training takes time and patience but generally shelter dogs are easier trained, better behaved, and healthier. reading is a good thing to do. also, there are training courses you can enroll in. if you have the money for them, go for it!!! its hard to tell you eexactly what you need to do to train your animal since you don't know anything about it yet. get it home, spend time with it. get it into a routine and then ask what needs improving. let me know if you have further questiong, I work with a rescue and have heard this question many times! PM me if you need anything.

that's great you're going to the shelter. Take your time while looking for a pet. Training takes time. I like reward training with treats and praise. If you find the process to hard to train on your own check out petsmart pet classes or talk with your vet. Books and videos are good. I made our dog and outside dog because we work all the time and it wasn't fair to lock him up inside the house all day without a potty break. We got one of those wireless electric fence's from Petsmart. It comes with directions on training your dog. I love it. That was easy. You just open the package and plug it in and set the boundary. Best of luck to you.

I got my dog from the shelter, and he's the smartest most well behaved dog I've ever had - I didn't even have to train him. If you get lucky, you'll get one that's already trained.

My dog was scared to even go on the couches or beds when we got him, but soon learned he was allowed in his new home, and they quickly became his He never touches the garbage, never steals food, I can leave meat, walk away, and it'll still be there when I get back.

Oh, a little one. I prefer bigger dogs, but I love em all!

Also, you could crate train them. Have you read about that?

Well, I don't crate train my dogs. When I was younger, my parents did. I don't really remember too well.

Also I babysat dogs who were crate trained, they were always crated while the owners were out or sleeping.

There are really only two words that will help with training......Love and Affection, that's really all you need,if you love the dog and show it affection they will do almost anything for you to Please you.

Also remember to use hand signals as well as verbal commands,if you want your dog to stay, tell it to stay and hold your hand up as well, like us dumb Humans they go deaf as they get older and by the hand signals they still know what it means.
A lot of people say you should give them a treat when they do the right thing for you,if He/She does that just make a fuss of them and tell them Good Boy/Girl that's works better than any treat.
