So I recently reluctantly.. cough cough purchased two brand spanking new USBConnect Mercury devices seeing as how what used to be free wifi is now not free.
first question we asked the retail sales dude was a will it work with linux and blah blah..

having some general knowledge with this OS i figured I would be able to make it work after he said it would.

so my stupid a** went ahead and bought said devices. uno for moi and the other for horsey lady.

so here we are now.. new internet connect devices and no internet either unless I use the tethernet port.

So after going through forums and several ATT customer service people I got nowhere. apparently no one else has any clue about linux

So then I tried google.. the omnipotent and omnipresent one.. and it also failed me..
so going back to old wireless set up thingy-ma-bobs- I figured that if I established or rather created a dial up connection that it should work right? well
I tried it on my PC and it did. and I was so happy. so off I went to my laptop to do the same and lo and behold,, Apparently I have no administrative permissions and blah blah blah. I uninstalled linux and reinstalled it. Surely I would have access to everything.. nope.. My limited knowledge with this OS is also probably and most likely hindering my efforts, or maybe this damn device just won't work on this system.. even though it worked on my pc..

so here is my question..

anyone here familiar with ASUS Eee PC900A? or anyone know how to create a file without getting stupid errors. or how to install said USB device so that I can have internet access on the go?

any help if any would be highly appreciated.

Sorry, Juan, but I'm clueless about Linux.... I'm lucky if I can just tell a noobie that they're in Fat City, without being accused of flaming!

Well there are a few things to consider.

what distribution are you using?
What device are you using?
Have you found the correct drivers for your device?

Going on what emoric said......

If you are using Ubuntu (which if you are completely clueless about Linux, you need to be) you need to press Alt+F2, type in "gksu nautilus" without the quotes and hit enter.

It will then ask you for your password and give you administrative, or "root" access.

If you aren't using Ubuntu, you need to log back out, and log in as 'root' without the quotes using the root password you set up when you installed.

If it has a Windows driver and is a Wifi device, odds are it has an NDIS driver, in which case, yea, I need to know the distro.

should have read up on this earlier.
but I am Running on Xandros.. I tried Everything but apparently there was some deal that was made 2with the company. so I would have to uninstall this and start it with Ubuntu. but oh well the damn thing just wasn't compatible.

Xandros. Good. That is Debian-based. Same family of product.

Tell me, did you set up a root password during installation?
