I've always had issues with that saying, however I find this one to be more universally applicable:

You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose.
You can't pick your friends nose.

My biological mother is the trash of this earth. Including me (her oldest child) she has 4 or 5 other kids, one of which passed away because of her negligence. But she's not my mother, my mother who I love dearly isn't of bioloigcal relations to me. All I feel for Linda (my birth mom): Thanks for the 23 chomosomes...

A family doesn't have to be of blood relation. It's a group of people who love and are there each other no matter what.

Blood may be thicker than water, but the heart is what pumps the blood.
