Well, could be it's just a common fruit in the South, and in the days of slavery, the large black populations were centered in the South.....really delicious on hot days. I just adore watermelon...as well as a good fried chicken!

Political figures in America have been the subject of lampoon and caricatures since it's earliest times. Has there ever been a leader in America who wasn't mocked or ridiculed through cartoon or effigy or some other less than flattering image?

I can't think of any. Bush 43's head on the Game of Thrones comes to mind. Plenty from Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan, and so forth.
