New York Yankees(6-6). Avert sweep.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched seven strong innings in helping the Yankees avoid being swept by the Minnesota Twins in a 9-3 victory.

Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, and Jason Giambi all homered to halt the Twins' five-game winning streak.

Jason Giambi hit two long, towering home runs in the second and sixth innings.

Wang(1-0) was dominant: struck out eight, allowed seven hits, and one earned run.

"Wang was terrific," said manager Joe Torre. "He just couldn't have been better for us than he was."

Alex Rodriguez moved past Cal Ripken Jr. and into 36th place on the career home run list with his 432nd career home run in the seventh inning.

After being kept in check for the first two games of the series, the Yanks ended the game with 17 hits: Damon, Giambi, Rodriguez, and Sheffield all had three hits.
