The local library has a large selection of music cds to borrow. Is it wrong/illegal to check out cds and copy them? I mean, does the library just assume we're all on the honor system and wouldn't do such a thing?

Absolutely, it's illegal.

Course, I bet many if not most borrowers do it, and no-one would ever know (I don't mind - well, I don't even borrow cd's ) So your call - call it conscience. I know many guys who buy cd's, rip them to mp3, then sell them on ebay. Seems a lot of effort to me.

But then why do they do it? I'm not so much arguing that it's wrong, more that it's silly to lend something so incredibly easy to copy. It's not like there's even a small chance that anyone would ever get caught. Nor are humans well known for their ability to take the moral high ground when no one is watching...unfortunatley.

s***, you can photocopy books right there in the library

They lend them because they fit into a library's objective - provide free access to published information.

Also, you can photo copy magazines and sections of books while at the library. Why is that different?

I do that sometimes.

I think I'm trying to make it ok to steal from the library, but the "good girl" side of me is combating that train of thought in an effort to save me from myself.

Well, it's illegal and it's copyright infringement.

It is no different from downloading the CD via torrents or Limewire.

In fact, it's probably safer since no one can capture your IP address and directly sue you.

If you're OK with that, go for it.

I don't know that I am. I'm annoyingly honest. However, the photcopying thing is getting me. If you are allowed to photcopy reading material I don't see why you can't "copy" music.

You're not really "allowed" to photocopy reading material.

Here's how it works:

Any reproduction (yes, any reproduction) of copyrighted work without the express permission of the copyright holder is illegal by the terms of copyright law.

However, there are some exceptions made. You're allowed to reproduce small sections of a work for educational purposes, parody, etc.

But you cannot (in general) reproduce an entire work, or significant chunks of it, whether it's a whole magazine article, an entire book, or whatever, for any reason at all without permission. So, strictly speaking, copying that 6-page article about the Higgs Boson out of the Journal of Physics at the local library is indeed a copyright violation.

But people do it anyway and no one calls them criminals. I feel like a kid saying to her parents, "but EVERYone is doing it!"

If you rip music, it's theft. If you photocopy an article, no one minds.

Hell, the whole library is robbing author's of book sales.

Meh. I dunno.
