There is a saying in the martial arts to describe the proper frame of mind needed to become a master. Mind like water. This is a state of mind that writers must strive for as well. Write about that feeling. Have you ever experienced it? If so how did i feel? What images does the phrase "Mind the water" bring to... well your mind?
Write a page about an embarrassing or painful incident that happened to you.
Poems or lyrics to a song often spark great thoughts. Both rely on images in songs that can stir your imagination. They also usually hint at a broader story, or portray an emotional state. Trying picking up a book of poems or lyrics, see if anything inspires you.
Set the tone of your story to a particular song, write as you listen to the music, let it flow freely.
A stepparent has placed his/her ancient family portrait on a wall. Describe the portrait.
Look at a beautiful pictures and begin to tell the story behind it.
Talk to an aged person, ask them to tell you a story from their life. Use it as the basis of your story and expand and develop into something more.
